Christians should pray for all people

2 So then, this is what I want to ask you first. Please pray for all people. Ask God to supply what they need. Ask God to help them. Thank God for what he does for everyone. 2 Pray in that way for kings and for all rulers and people who have authority. Pray for God to help them, so that we may live our lives without trouble or danger. Then we can live in a good way that respects God and other people. 3 It is good that we should pray like that. It makes God, our Saviour, happy. 4 He wants to save all people. He wants everyone to know his message about what is true.

5 There is only one God. There is also only one person who brings God and people together. That person is Christ Jesus, who became a man himself. 6 He died as a sacrifice on behalf of all people, to pay the debt of their sins. He died at the proper time for God to show his purpose clearly. 7 God chose me as his apostle, to tell this same message to people. I am telling you what is true. I am not telling lies! Yes, he sent me to teach his true message to the Gentiles, so that they would believe in him.

8 So then, in every place where you meet together, I want the men to pray. The men who lift up their hands and pray must be those who live good lives. They must not be people who are angry or who quarrel with others.

Christian women should also live in a good way

9 I also want the women to dress themselves properly in a way that is right. They should not bring shame on themselves. What makes a woman beautiful? It is not the special way that she prepares her hair. It is not the gold things or jewels that she wears. It is not her expensive clothes. 10 Christian women should not dress themselves like that. Instead, their lives should show that they do good things. They say that they want to please God, so that is the proper way for them to live.

11 When you meet together, a woman should learn quietly. She must respect the leaders who teach in the church. 12 I do not let a woman teach men. I do not let a woman have authority over men. Instead, she should listen quietly. 13 I say this because God made Adam first. [ a ] Then he made Eve. 14 It was Eve, not Adam, who believed the lies that Satan told her. Because she believed Satan completely, she did what God had said was wrong. [ b ]

15 But even as women give birth to children, God will save them. They must continue to trust God and to love other people. They must live in a way that shows they belong to God. They must think carefully about how they live. Then God will save them.

God Wants Us to Pray for Everyone

2 First of all, I ask that you pray for all people. Ask God to bless them and give them what they need. And give thanks. 2 You should pray for rulers and for all who have authority. Pray for these leaders so that we can live quiet and peaceful lives—lives full of devotion to God and respect for him. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior.

4 God wants everyone to be saved and to fully understand the truth. 5 There is only one God, and there is only one way that people can reach God. That way is through Christ Jesus, who as a man 6 gave himself to pay for everyone to be free. This is the message that was given to us at just the right time. 7 And I was chosen as an apostle to tell people that message. (I am telling the truth. I am not lying.) I was chosen to teach those who are not Jews to believe and understand the truth.

Special Instructions for Men and Women

8 I want the men everywhere to pray. Men who lift their hands in prayer must be devoted to God and pleasing to him. They must be men who keep themselves from getting angry and having arguments.

9 And I want the women to make themselves attractive in the right way. Their clothes should be sensible and appropriate. They should not draw attention to themselves with fancy hairstyles or gold jewelry or pearls or expensive clothes. 10 But they should make themselves attractive by the good things they do. That is more appropriate for women who say they are devoted to God.

11 A woman should learn while listening quietly and being completely willing to obey. 12 I don’t allow a woman to teach a man or tell him what to do. She must listen quietly, 13 because Adam was made first. Eve was made later. 14 Also, Adam was not the one who was tricked. [ a ] It was the woman who was tricked and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved in their work of having children. They will be saved if they continue to live in faith, love, and holiness with sensible behavior.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Timothy 2:14 Adam was not … tricked The devil tricked Eve, and Eve caused Adam to sin. See Gen. 3:1-13.

2 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

7 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity.

8 I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

10 But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.

15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.

A Call to Prayer

2 First of all, then, I urge that ( A ) requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people, 2 ( B ) for kings and all who are in [ a ] authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and [ b ] dignity. 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of ( C ) God our Savior, 4 ( D ) who wants all people to be ( E ) saved and to ( F ) come to the [ c ] knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is ( G ) one God, and ( H ) one mediator also between God and mankind, the ( I ) man Christ Jesus, 6 who ( J ) gave Himself as a ransom for all, the ( K ) testimony [ d ] given at [ e ] ( L ) the proper time. 7 ( M ) For this I was appointed as a [ f ] preacher and ( N ) an apostle ( ( O ) I am telling the truth, I am not lying), as a teacher of ( P ) the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Instructions for Believers

8 Therefore ( Q ) I want the men ( R ) in every place to pray, ( S ) lifting up ( T ) holy hands, without anger and dispute. 9 Likewise, I want ( U ) women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, [ g ] modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive apparel, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women making a claim to godliness. 11 ( V ) A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. 12 ( W ) But I do not allow a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 ( X ) For it was Adam who was first [ h ] created, and then Eve. 14 And it was not Adam who was deceived, but ( Y ) the woman was [ i ] deceived and [ j ] became a wrongdoer. 15 But [ k ] women will be [ l ] preserved through [ m ] childbirth—if they continue in ( Z ) faith, love, and sanctity, with moderation.

Instructions on Worship

2 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, ( A ) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, ( B ) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness ( C ) and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases ( D ) God our Savior, ( E ) 4 who wants ( F ) all people ( G ) to be saved ( H ) and to come to a knowledge of the truth. ( I ) 5 For there is one God ( J ) and one mediator ( K ) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, ( L ) 6 who gave himself as a ransom ( M ) for all people. This has now been witnessed to ( N ) at the proper time. ( O ) 7 And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying ( P ) —and a true and faithful teacher ( Q ) of the Gentiles. ( R )

8 Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands ( S ) without anger or disputing. 9 I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, ( T ) 10 but with good deeds, ( U ) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman [ a ] should learn in quietness and full submission. ( V ) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; [ b ] she must be quiet. ( W ) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. ( X ) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. ( Y ) 15 But women [ c ] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love ( Z ) and holiness with propriety.
