Saul fights against the Amalekites

15 Samuel said to Saul, ‘The Lord sent me to anoint you as king to rule his people, the Israelites. So now listen to this message from the Lord . 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “It is time to punish the Amalekites! When the Israelites came out of Egypt, the Amalekites attacked them. 3 Now go and attack the Amalekites. Completely destroy everything that they have. Do not save anything. Kill the men and women, as well as their children and babies. Kill their cows, sheep, camels and donkeys.” ’

4 So Saul called his army to come together. The men met at Telaim and Saul counted them. There were 200,000 soldiers from Israel and another 10,000 men from Judah's tribe. 5 Saul and his army went to the city of the Amalekites. They waited in a small valley to attack their enemy. 6 Saul said to the Kenite people, ‘Go away from here! I will kill the Amalekites, but I do not want to kill you. You were kind to the Israelites when they came out from Egypt.’ So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites. [ a ]

7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites. He fought them all the way from Havilah to Shur, which is east of Egypt. 8 Saul caught their king, Agag, while he was still alive. Saul's soldiers used their swords to kill all of Agag's people. 9 But Saul and the army let King Agag live. Also, they did not kill the best sheep, lambs, cows and fat calves. They kept all the good things and they did not agree to destroy them. But they killed everything that was weak and useless.

Samuel tells Saul God's message

10 Then the Lord gave this message to Samuel: 11 ‘I am sorry that I chose Saul to be king. He has turned away from me. He has not obeyed my commands.’

When Samuel heard that, he was very upset. He prayed aloud to the Lord all that night.

12 Samuel got up early the next morning. He went to meet Saul. Someone told Samuel, ‘Saul went to Carmel. He has put up a tall stone to give himself honour. Now he has left there and he has gone to Gilgal.’

13 Samuel went and he found Saul. Saul said to Samuel, ‘I pray that the Lord will bless you. I have obeyed the Lord 's command.’ 14 But Samuel said, ‘If that is true, why can I hear the noise of sheep and cows?’

15 Saul answered, ‘My soldiers took them from the Amalekites. They saved the best sheep and cows. They will offer them to the Lord your God as sacrifices. We killed all the other animals.’

16 Samuel said to Saul, ‘Listen to me! I will tell you what the Lord said to me last night.’ Saul said, ‘Tell me.’

17 Samuel said, ‘At one time, you thought that you were not an important person. Now you have become the leader of all the tribes of Israel. The Lord chose you to be king of Israel. 18 He gave you a job to do. He told you, “Go and kill all those wicked Amalekites. Fight against them until you have destroyed them all.” 19 Why did you not obey the Lord ? Instead you have been greedy. You have hurried to take things for yourself. You have done something evil that does not please the Lord .’

20 Saul said to Samuel, ‘I did obey the Lord ! I did the job that the Lord told me to do. I killed all the Amalekites and I brought back Agag, their king. 21 But the army did not kill all the sheep and cows that they took from the Amalekites. They brought the best animals to offer as a sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.’

22 But Samuel said, ‘What makes the Lord happy? Which is better? Is he more pleased when people offer burnt offerings and sacrifices to him? Or is he more pleased when people obey him? Listen! It is better to obey the Lord than to offer sacrifices to him. That is true even if you offer to him the best animals that you have.

23 You have turned against God. That is worse than using magic. You think that you know what is right better than God does. That is as bad as worshipping idols. You decided not to obey the Lord 's command. Now the Lord has decided that you will not be king any longer.’

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, ‘It is true, I have done a bad thing. I did not obey the Lord 's command. I did not do what you told me to do. I was afraid of the army. I agreed to do what they wanted. 25 Please forgive my sin. Return with me so that I can worship the Lord .’

26 But Samuel said to Saul, ‘I will not return with you. You refused to obey the Lord 's command. So now the Lord has decided that you will no longer be king of Israel.’

27 Samuel turned away to leave Saul. But Saul pulled the edge of Samuel's coat and it tore. 28 Samuel said to him, ‘The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel away from you today. He has given it to a man who is better than you. 29 The great God who rules over Israel always does what he says he will do. He does not change his mind. People may change their minds, but he does not!’

30 Saul said again, ‘I have done a bad thing. But please show Israel's leaders and people that you respect me. Please return with me so that I can worship the Lord your God.’

31 So Samuel went back with Saul. Saul worshipped the Lord .

32 Then Samuel said, ‘Bring Agag, king of the Amalekites, to me.’

Agag came to Samuel. Agag was happy because he thought, ‘I am sure that now I will not have to die a painful death.’

33 But Samuel said to Agag, ‘You have used your sword to kill the children of many mothers. Now your own mother will have no children that are still alive.’ Then Samuel cut Agag into pieces at the Lord 's altar in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel left Gilgal and he went to his home in Ramah. Saul went to his home in Gibeah. 35 Until Samuel died, he never saw Saul again. Samuel was very sad about Saul. But the Lord was sorry that he had chosen Saul to be king of Israel.

Saul Destroys the Amalekites

15 One day Samuel said to Saul, “The Lord sent me to anoint you king over his people Israel. Now listen to his message. 2 The Lord All-Powerful says: ‘When the Israelites came out of Egypt, the Amalekites tried to stop them from going to Canaan. I saw what the Amalekites did. 3 Now go fight against the Amalekites. You must completely destroy the Amalekites and everything that belongs to them. Don’t let anything live; you must kill all the men and women and all of their children and little babies. You must kill all of their cattle and sheep and all of their camels and donkeys.’”

4 Saul gathered the army together at Telaim. There were 200,000 foot soldiers and 10,000 other men, including the men from Judah. 5 Then Saul went to the city of Amalek and waited in the valley. 6 He said to the Kenites, “Go away! Leave the Amalekites. Then I won’t destroy you with the Amalekites. You showed kindness to the Israelites when they came out of Egypt.” So the Kenites left the Amalekites.

7 Saul defeated the Amalekites. He fought them and chased them all the way from Havilah to Shur, at the border of Egypt. 8 Agag was the king of the Amalekites. Saul captured Agag alive. Saul let Agag live, but he killed all the men in Agag’s army. 9 Saul and the Israelite soldiers felt bad about destroying everything. So they let Agag live. They also kept the fat cattle, the best sheep, and the lambs. They kept everything that was worth keeping. They didn’t want to destroy those things. They destroyed only what was not worth keeping.

Samuel Tells Saul About His Sin

10 Then Samuel received this message from the Lord : 11 “Saul has stopped following me, so I am sorry that I made him king. He is not doing what I tell him.” Samuel became angry and cried to the Lord all night.

12 Samuel got up early the next morning and went to meet Saul. But the people told Samuel, “Saul went to Carmel. He went there to set up a stone monument to honor himself. Then he left there and went down to Gilgal.”

So Samuel went to Saul. Saul had just offered the first part of the things he took from the Amalekites as a burnt offering to the Lord. [ a ] 13 When Samuel came near to Saul, Saul greeted him and said, “The Lord bless you! I have obeyed the Lord ’s commands.”

14 But Samuel said, “Then what is that sound I hear? Why do I hear sheep and cattle?”

15 Saul said, “The soldiers took them from the Amalekites. They saved the best sheep and cattle to burn as sacrifices to the Lord your God. But we destroyed everything else.”

16 Samuel said to Saul, “Stop! Let me tell you what the Lord told me last night.”

Saul answered, “Tell me what he said.”

17 Samuel said, “In the past you didn’t think that you were important, but the Lord chose you to be the king. So you became the leader of the tribes of Israel. 18 The Lord sent you on a special mission. He said, ‘Go and destroy all the Amalekites. They are evil people. Destroy them all! Fight them until they are completely finished.’ 19 So why didn’t you listen to the Lord ? You did what the Lord said is wrong because you wanted to keep what you took in battle.”

20 Saul said, “But I did obey the Lord ! I went where the Lord sent me. I destroyed all the Amalekites. I brought back only one—their king Agag. 21 And the soldiers took the best sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

22 But Samuel answered, “Which pleases the Lord more: burnt offerings and sacrifices or obeying his commands? It is better to obey the Lord than to offer sacrifices to him. It is better to listen to him than to offer the fat from rams. 23 Refusing to obey is as bad as the sin of sorcery. Being stubborn and doing what you want is like the sin of worshiping idols. You refused to obey the Lord ’s command, so he now refuses to accept you as king.”

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. I did not obey the Lord ’s commands, and I did not do what you told me. I was afraid of the people, and I did what they said. 25 Now I beg you, forgive me for doing this sin. Come back with me, so I may worship the Lord .”

26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I won’t go back with you. You rejected the Lord ’s command, and now the Lord rejects you as king of Israel.”

27 When Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught Samuel’s robe. The robe tore. 28 Samuel said to Saul, “In this same way the Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today. He has given the kingdom to one of your friends, a man who is a better person than you. 29 The one who lives forever, the God of Israel, does not lie and will not change his mind. He is not like a man who is always changing his mind.”

30 Saul answered, “All right, I sinned! But please come back with me. Show me some respect in front of the leaders and the Israelites. Come back with me so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord .

32 Samuel said, “Bring King Agag of the Amalekites to me.”

Agag came to Samuel. Agag was tied with chains and thought, “Surely he won’t kill me.” [ b ]

33 But Samuel said to Agag, “Your sword took babies from their mothers. So now, your mother will have no children.” And Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the Lord at Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel left and went to Ramah. And Saul went up to his home in Gibeah. 35 After that Samuel never saw Saul again. Samuel was very sad for Saul. And the Lord was very sorry that he had made Saul king of Israel.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Samuel 15:12 Saul had just offered … Lord This is from the ancient Greek version.
  2. 1 Samuel 15:32 Surely … kill me The ancient Greek version has “This treatment is worse than death.”

15 Samuel also said unto Saul, The Lord sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the Lord .

2 Thus saith the Lord of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

4 And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

5 And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

6 And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

7 And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.

8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

9 But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

10 Then came the word of the Lord unto Samuel, saying,

11 It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the Lord all night.

12 And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

13 And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the Lord : I have performed the commandment of the Lord .

14 And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

15 And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

16 Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the Lord hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

17 And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the Lord anointed thee king over Israel?

18 And the Lord sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

19 Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the Lord , but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the Lord ?

20 And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the Lord , and have gone the way which the Lord sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

21 But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the Lord thy God in Gilgal.

22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord ? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord , he hath also rejected thee from being king.

24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the Lord , and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

25 Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord .

26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the Lord , and the Lord hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

27 And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

28 And Samuel said unto him, The Lord hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.

29 And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

30 Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the Lord thy God.

31 So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the Lord .

32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

33 And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the Lord in Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

35 And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the Lord repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.

Saul’s Disobedience

15 Then Samuel said to Saul, “ ( A ) The Lord sent me to anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore, listen to the [ a ] words of the Lord . 2 This is what the Lord of armies says: ‘I will [ b ] punish Amalek ( B ) for what he did to Israel, in that he obstructed him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. 3 Now go and strike Amalek and ( C ) completely destroy everything that he has, and do not spare him; but ( D ) put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

4 Then Saul summoned the people and [ c ] counted them in ( E ) Telaim: two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand men of Judah. 5 And Saul came to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the [ d ] wadi. 6 But Saul said to ( F ) the Kenites, “Go, get away, go down from among the Amalekites, so that I do not destroy you along with them; for ( G ) you showed kindness to all the sons of Israel when they went up from Egypt.” So the Kenites got away from among the Amalekites. 7 Then ( H ) Saul [ e ] defeated the Amalekites, from ( I ) Havilah [ f ] going toward ( J ) Shur, which is [ g ] east of Egypt. 8 He captured ( K ) Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and ( L ) completely destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword. 9 But Saul and the people ( M ) spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the more valuable animals , the lambs, and everything that was good, and were unwilling to destroy them completely; but everything despicable and weak, that they completely destroyed.

Samuel Rebukes Saul

10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, 11 ( N ) I regret that I have made Saul king, because ( O ) he has turned back from [ h ] following Me and has not carried out My commands.” And Samuel was furious and ( P ) cried out to the Lord all night. 12 Samuel got up early in the morning to meet Saul; and it was reported to Samuel, saying, “Saul came to ( Q ) Carmel, and behold, he set up a monument for himself, then turned and proceeded on [ i ] down to ( R ) Gilgal.” 13 So Samuel came to Saul, and Saul said to him, “ ( S ) Blessed are you of the Lord ! I have carried out the command of the Lord .” 14 But Samuel said, “ ( T ) What then is this [ j ] bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the [ k ] bellowing of the oxen which I hear?” 15 Saul said, “They have brought them from the Amalekites, for ( U ) the people spared the best of the sheep and oxen to sacrifice to the Lord your God; but the rest we have completely destroyed.” 16 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Stop, and let me inform you of what the Lord said to me last night.” And he said to him, “Speak!”

17 So Samuel said, “ [ l ] Is it not true , ( V ) though you were [ m ] insignificant in your own eyes, that you became the head of the tribes of Israel? For the Lord anointed you as king over Israel. 18 And the Lord sent you on a [ n ] mission, and said, ‘ ( W ) Go and completely destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and fight against them until they are eliminated.’ 19 Why then did you not obey the voice of the Lord ? ( X ) Instead, you loudly rushed upon the spoils and did what was evil in the sight of the Lord !”

20 Then Saul said to Samuel, “ ( Y ) I did obey the voice of the Lord , for I went on the [ o ] mission on which the Lord sent me; and I have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have completely destroyed the Amalekites. 21 But ( Z ) the people took some of the spoils, sheep and oxen, the choicest of the things designated for destruction, to sacrifice to the Lord your God at Gilgal.” 22 Samuel said,

( AA ) Does the Lord have as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
As in obeying the voice of the Lord ?
Behold, ( AB ) to obey is better than a sacrifice,
And to pay attention is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is as reprehensible as the sin of ( AC ) divination,
And insubordination is as reprehensible as ( AD ) false religion and idolatry.
Since you have rejected the word of the Lord ,
( AE ) He has also rejected you from being king.”

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “ ( AF ) I have sinned, for ( AG ) I have violated the [ p ] command of the Lord and your words, because I feared the people and listened to their voice. 25 Now then, ( AH ) please pardon my sin and return with me, so that I may worship the Lord .” 26 But Samuel said to Saul, “I will not return with you; for ( AI ) you have rejected the word of the Lord , and the Lord has rejected you from being king over Israel.” 27 Then Samuel turned to go, but ( AJ ) Saul grasped the edge of his robe, and it tore off. 28 So Samuel said to him, “ ( AK ) The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and has given it to your neighbor, who is better than you. 29 Also the [ q ] ( AL ) Glory of Israel ( AM ) will not lie nor change His mind; for He is not a man, that He would change His mind.” 30 Then Saul said, “I have sinned; ( AN ) but please honor me now before the elders of my people and before all Israel, and go back with me, ( AO ) so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back following Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord .

32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag, the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him [ r ] cheerfully. And Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is gone!” 33 But Samuel said, “ ( AP ) As your sword has made women childless, so shall your mother be childless among women.” And Samuel cut Agag to pieces before the Lord at Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel went to ( AQ ) Ramah, but Saul went up to his house at ( AR ) Gibeah of Saul. 35 And ( AS ) Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death, though Samuel ( AT ) mourned for [ s ] Saul. And the Lord regretted that He had made Saul king over Israel.

The Lord Rejects Saul as King

15 Samuel said to Saul, “I am the one the Lord sent to anoint ( A ) you king over his people Israel; so listen now to the message from the Lord . 2 This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘I will punish the Amalekites ( B ) for what they did to Israel when they waylaid them as they came up from Egypt. 3 Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally ( C ) destroy [ a ] all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’”

4 So Saul summoned the men and mustered them at Telaim—two hundred thousand foot soldiers and ten thousand from Judah. 5 Saul went to the city of Amalek and set an ambush in the ravine. 6 Then he said to the Kenites, ( D ) “Go away, leave the Amalekites so that I do not destroy you along with them; for you showed kindness to all the Israelites when they came up out of Egypt.” So the Kenites moved away from the Amalekites.

7 Then Saul attacked the Amalekites ( E ) all the way from Havilah to Shur, ( F ) near the eastern border of Egypt. 8 He took Agag ( G ) king of the Amalekites alive, ( H ) and all his people he totally destroyed with the sword. 9 But Saul and the army spared ( I ) Agag and the best of the sheep and cattle, the fat calves [ b ] and lambs—everything that was good. These they were unwilling to destroy completely, but everything that was despised and weak they totally destroyed.

10 Then the word of the Lord came to Samuel: 11 “I regret ( J ) that I have made Saul king, because he has turned ( K ) away from me and has not carried out my instructions.” ( L ) Samuel was angry, ( M ) and he cried out to the Lord all that night.

12 Early in the morning Samuel got up and went to meet Saul, but he was told, “Saul has gone to Carmel. ( N ) There he has set up a monument ( O ) in his own honor and has turned and gone on down to Gilgal.”

13 When Samuel reached him, Saul said, “The Lord bless you! I have carried out the Lord ’s instructions.”

14 But Samuel said, “What then is this bleating of sheep in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle that I hear?”

15 Saul answered, “The soldiers brought them from the Amalekites; they spared the best of the sheep and cattle to sacrifice to the Lord your God, but we totally destroyed the rest.”

16 “Enough!” Samuel said to Saul. “Let me tell you what the Lord said to me last night.”

“Tell me,” Saul replied.

17 Samuel said, “Although you were once small ( P ) in your own eyes, did you not become the head of the tribes of Israel? The Lord anointed you king over Israel. 18 And he sent you on a mission, saying, ‘Go and completely destroy those wicked people, the Amalekites; wage war against them until you have wiped them out.’ 19 Why did you not obey the Lord ? Why did you pounce on the plunder ( Q ) and do evil in the eyes of the Lord ?”

20 “But I did obey ( R ) the Lord ,” Saul said. “I went on the mission the Lord assigned me. I completely destroyed the Amalekites and brought back Agag their king. 21 The soldiers took sheep and cattle from the plunder, the best of what was devoted to God, in order to sacrifice them to the Lord your God at Gilgal.”

22 But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices
as much as in obeying the Lord ?
To obey is better than sacrifice, ( S )
and to heed is better than the fat of rams.
23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, ( T )
and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.
Because you have rejected ( U ) the word of the Lord ,
he has rejected you as king.”

24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned. ( V ) I violated ( W ) the Lord ’s command and your instructions. I was afraid ( X ) of the men and so I gave in to them. 25 Now I beg you, forgive ( Y ) my sin and come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord .”

26 But Samuel said to him, “I will not go back with you. You have rejected ( Z ) the word of the Lord , and the Lord has rejected you as king over Israel!”

27 As Samuel turned to leave, Saul caught hold of the hem of his robe, ( AA ) and it tore. ( AB ) 28 Samuel said to him, “The Lord has torn ( AC ) the kingdom ( AD ) of Israel from you today and has given it to one of your neighbors—to one better than you. ( AE ) 29 He who is the Glory of Israel does not lie ( AF ) or change ( AG ) his mind; for he is not a human being, that he should change his mind.”

30 Saul replied, “I have sinned. ( AH ) But please honor ( AI ) me before the elders of my people and before Israel; come back with me, so that I may worship the Lord your God.” 31 So Samuel went back with Saul, and Saul worshiped the Lord .

32 Then Samuel said, “Bring me Agag king of the Amalekites.”

Agag came to him in chains. [ c ] And he thought, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”

33 But Samuel said,

“As your sword has made women childless,
so will your mother be childless among women.” ( AJ )

And Samuel put Agag to death before the Lord at Gilgal.

34 Then Samuel left for Ramah, ( AK ) but Saul went up to his home in Gibeah ( AL ) of Saul. 35 Until the day Samuel ( AM ) died, he did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned ( AN ) for him. And the Lord regretted ( AO ) that he had made Saul king over Israel.
