Jesus is God's message to people

1 We have an important message to tell you. We want to tell you about the person who was already there before the beginning of the world. We have heard him speak. We have seen him with our own eyes. We watched him and we touched him. He is the Word that gives us life with God. [ a ]

2 He showed himself clearly when he lived on this earth. From long ago he was together with God the Father, and he lives for ever. We saw him and we are telling you what is true. He is the one who has shown himself to us. 3 We also want you to share this new life with us. We share this life with God the Father and Jesus Christ his Son. That is why we are telling you about everything that we have seen and heard. 4 We are writing to you so that together we all may be completely happy.

God is light

5 We are telling you the good news that Jesus Christ told to us. This is the message: God is completely good and clean. He is like light. There is nothing dark about him. 6 Do you say that you share in the life that God gives? If you say that, but if you still live in the dark, you are telling a lie. You are not living in God's true way. 7 But when we live in a right way, it is like living in the light. God is always in the light. So, if we live in the light, we share together in the life which God gives. And when Jesus, the Son of God, died on the cross, he saved us from all our sins. The blood of his sacrifice makes us clean.

8 If we say that we never do any wrong thing, we are deceiving ourselves. Even though we may think it is true, it is a lie. 9 Instead, we should agree that we have done wrong things and tell that to God. Then God will forgive us for our sins. He always does what he has promised to do. He always does what is right. He will forgive us and he will make us clean again, whatever bad things we may have done. 10 God says that all people have done wrong things. So, if we say that we have not done any wrong thing, we are saying that God tells lies. It shows that we have not accepted his message at all.

Footnotes

  1. 1:1 John is writing with authority. He is saying that he was with Jesus, the Word of God. He knows Jesus, and he knows what Jesus taught.

1 We want to tell you about the Word [ a ] that gives life—the one who existed before the world began. This is the one we have heard and have seen with our own eyes. We saw what he did, and our hands touched him. 2 Yes, the one who is life was shown to us. We saw him, and so we can tell others about him. We now tell you about him. He is the eternal life that was with God the Father and was shown to us. 3 We are telling you about what we have seen and heard because we want you to have fellowship [ b ] with us. The fellowship we share together is with God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. 4 We write these things to you so that you can be full of joy with us.

God Forgives Our Sins

5 We heard the true teaching from God. Now we tell it to you: God is light, and in him there is no darkness. 6 So if we say that we share in life with God, but we continue living in darkness, we are liars, who don’t follow the truth. 7 We should live in the light, where God is. If we live in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and the blood sacrifice of Jesus, God’s Son, washes away every sin and makes us clean.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we are fooling ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 But if we confess our sins, God will forgive us. We can trust God to do this. He always does what is right. He will make us clean from all the wrong things we have done. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we are saying that God is a liar and that we don’t accept his true teaching.

Footnotes

  1. 1 John 1:1 Word The Greek word is “ logos ,” meaning any kind of communication. Here, it means Christ—the way God told people about himself.
  2. 1 John 1:3 fellowship Associating with people and sharing things together with them. Believers in Christ share love, joy, sorrow, faith, and other things with each other and with God. Also in verse 7.

1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;

2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)

3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:

7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

The Incarnate Word

1 What was ( A ) from the beginning, what we have ( B ) heard, what we have ( C ) seen with our eyes, what we ( D ) have looked at and ( E ) touched with our hands, concerning the ( F ) Word of Life— 2 and ( G ) the life was revealed, and we have ( H ) seen and ( I ) testify and proclaim to you ( J ) the eternal life, which was ( K ) with the Father and was ( L ) revealed to us— 3 what we have ( M ) seen and ( N ) heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our ( O ) fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 ( P ) These things we write, so that our ( Q ) joy may be made complete.

God Is Light

5 ( R ) This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that ( S ) God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 ( T ) If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we ( U ) lie and ( V ) do not practice the truth; 7 but if we ( W ) walk in the Light as ( X ) He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and ( Y ) the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 ( Z ) If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the ( AA ) truth is not in us. 9 ( AB ) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous, so that He will forgive us our sins and ( AC ) cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 ( AD ) If we say that we have not sinned, we ( AE ) make Him a liar and ( AF ) His word is not in us.

The Incarnation of the Word of Life

1 That which was from the beginning, ( A ) which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, ( B ) which we have looked at and our hands have touched ( C ) —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; ( D ) we have seen it and testify to it, ( E ) and we proclaim to you the eternal life, ( F ) which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, ( G ) so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. ( H ) 4 We write this ( I ) to make our [ a ] joy complete. ( J )

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness

5 This is the message we have heard ( K ) from him and declare to you: God is light; ( L ) in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, ( M ) we lie and do not live out the truth. ( N ) 7 But if we walk in the light, ( O ) as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all [ b ] sin. ( P )

8 If we claim to be without sin, ( Q ) we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. ( R ) 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins ( S ) and purify us from all unrighteousness. ( T ) 10 If we claim we have not sinned, ( U ) we make him out to be a liar ( V ) and his word is not in us. ( W )
