Send the bad person away from you

5 We have heard bad news about what is happening among you. Some of you are having sex in wrong ways. We have heard that one man is even having sex with his own father's wife! Even people who do not know God do not do things as bad as that! 2 But, you are still proud of yourselves! Instead, you ought to be very sad and ashamed. You should have sent this man away from your group.

3 My body is not there with you, but my spirit is with you. It seems like I am present with you. So I have already decided about this man. This is how you should punish him for what he has done. 4 You have the authority of the Lord Jesus to do this. When you meet together as a group, my spirit will be with you. The power of our Lord Jesus will also be with you. 5 When you meet, put this man under Satan's authority. Satan will then destroy the man's body. Then God may save the man's spirit on the day when the Lord Jesus returns.

6 You should not be so proud of yourselves. Think about what yeast does in bread. A very small amount of yeast changes the whole loaf of bread. 7 The yeast in the flour is like one person who does wrong things. You must remove this old yeast from among you. Then you will be like a new loaf of bread. You are really like a loaf which has no yeast in it. [ a ] You are pure, because Christ died as a sacrifice on our behalf. He is like the lamb that the Israelites killed for their Passover meal. 8 As a result, we can have our own Passover festival. We must remove everything that is bad from among us. That is like what the Israelites did when they removed all the old yeast from their homes. Instead we live in a way that is pure and honest. It is like we are eating bread which has no yeast in it. [ b ]

9 I already wrote a letter to you. I told you that you must not be friends with people who have sex in wrong ways. 10 But I was not talking about people who do not know God. Those people have sex in wrong ways. They want many things to please themselves. They deceive people and they rob them. They worship idols. You could not keep away from all people like that, unless you left this world!

11 Now I am telling you this: I was talking about people who say that they are believers. If they say that, but they have sex in a wrong way, do not be friends with them. It is the same if they want many things for themselves. They may worship idols. They may insult people. They may often get drunk. They may deceive people and rob them. If one of your own group does things like that, do not even agree to eat a meal with them. 12-13 It is not right for me to decide about people who do not belong to the church group. God will judge those people. But you should decide what is right for the people who do belong to your group. Do what the Bible says:

‘Send the bad person away from among yourselves.’ [ c ]

Footnotes

  1. 5:7 In the Bible, yeast is often a picture of something bad that causes many more bad things to happen.
  2. 5:8 Israel's people ate a lamb and flat bread without any yeast in it for the Passover meal. The Passover festival was very special for Israel's people. They remembered when God saved them from Egypt. So they ate a special meal every year. See Exodus 12 .
  3. 5:12-13 See Deuteronomy 13:5 ; 17:7 , 12 ; 21:21 ; 22:21-24 ; Judges 20:13 .

Don’t Let Your People Live in Sin

5 I don’t want to believe what I am hearing—that there is sexual sin among you. And it is such a bad kind of sexual sin that even those who have never known God don’t allow it. People say that a man there has his father’s wife. 2 And still you are proud of yourselves! You should have been filled with sadness. And the man who committed that sin should be put out of your group. 3 I cannot be there with you in person, but I am with you in spirit. And I have already judged the man who did this. I judged him the same as I would if I were really there. 4 Come together in the name of our Lord Jesus. I will be with you in spirit, and you will have the power of our Lord Jesus with you. 5 Then turn this man over to Satan. His sinful self [ a ] has to be destroyed so that his spirit will be saved on the day when the Lord comes again.

6 Your proud talk is not good. You know the saying, “Just a little yeast makes the whole batch of dough rise.” 7 Take out all the old yeast, so that you will be a new batch of dough. You really are bread without yeast—Passover bread. [ b ] Yes, Christ our Passover Lamb [ c ] has already been killed. 8 So let us eat our Passover meal, but not with the bread that has the old yeast, the yeast of sin and wrongdoing. But let us eat the bread that has no yeast. This is the bread of goodness and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter that you should not associate with people who sin sexually. 10 But I did not mean the people of this world. You would have to leave the world to get away from all the people who sin sexually, or who are greedy and cheat each other, or who worship idols. 11 I meant you must not associate with people who claim to be believers but continue to live in sin. Don’t even eat with a brother or sister who sins sexually, is greedy, worships idols, abuses others with insults, gets drunk, or cheats people.

12-13 It is not my business to judge those who are not part of the group of believers. God will judge them, but you must judge those who are part of your group. The Scriptures say, “Make the evil person leave your group.” [ d ]

Footnotes

  1. 1 Corinthians 5:5 sinful self Or “body.” Literally, “flesh.”
  2. 1 Corinthians 5:7 Passover bread The special bread without yeast that the Jews ate at their Passover meal. Paul means that believers are free from sin, just as the Passover bread was free from yeast.
  3. 1 Corinthians 5:7 Passover Lamb Jesus was a sacrifice for his people, like a lamb killed for the Jewish Passover Feast.
  4. 1 Corinthians 5:12 Quote from Deut. 22:21 , 24 .

5 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife.

2 And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you.

3 For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed,

4 In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ,

5 To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

6 Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump?

7 Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

8 Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:

10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

11 But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolator, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.

12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?

13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.

Sexual Immorality Rebuked

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and sexual immorality of such a kind as does not exist even among the Gentiles, namely , that someone has ( A ) his father’s wife. 2 [ a ] You ( B ) have become [ b ] arrogant and [ c ] have not ( C ) mourned instead, so that the one who had done this deed would be ( D ) removed from your midst.

3 For I, on my part, though ( E ) absent in body but present in spirit, have already judged him who has so committed this, as though I were present. 4 ( F ) In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and [ d ] I with you in spirit, ( G ) with the power of our Lord Jesus, 5 I have decided [ e ] to ( H ) turn such a person over to ( I ) Satan for the destruction of his [ f ] body, so that his spirit may be saved on ( J ) the day of the [ g ] Lord.

6 ( K ) Your boasting is not good. ( L ) Do you not know that ( M ) a little [ h ] leaven leavens the whole lump of dough ? 7 Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our ( N ) Passover also has been sacrificed. 8 Therefore let’s celebrate the feast, ( O ) not with old leaven, nor with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter ( P ) not to associate with sexually immoral people; 10 I did not at all mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the greedy and swindlers, or with ( Q ) idolaters, for then you would have to leave the world. 11 But [ i ] actually, I [ j ] wrote to you not to associate [ k ] with any so-called ( R ) brother if he is a sexually immoral person, or a greedy person, or ( S ) an idolater, or is verbally abusive, or habitually drunk, or a swindler—not even to eat with such a person. 12 For what business of mine is it to judge ( T ) outsiders? ( U ) Do you not judge those who are within the church ? 13 But those who are outside, God [ l ] judges. ( V ) Remove the evil person from among yourselves .

Dealing With a Case of Incest

5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. ( A ) 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning ( B ) and have put out of your fellowship ( C ) the man who has been doing this? 3 For my part, even though I am not physically present, I am with you in spirit. ( D ) As one who is present with you in this way, I have already passed judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus ( E ) on the one who has been doing this. 4 So when you are assembled and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, 5 hand this man over ( F ) to Satan ( G ) for the destruction of the flesh, [ a ] [ b ] so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord. ( H )

6 Your boasting is not good. ( I ) Don’t you know that a little yeast ( J ) leavens the whole batch of dough? ( K ) 7 Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. ( L ) 8 Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old bread leavened with malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread ( M ) of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate ( N ) with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the people of this world ( O ) who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case you would have to leave this world. 11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister [ c ] ( P ) but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater ( Q ) or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people. ( R )

12 What business is it of mine to judge those outside ( S ) the church? Are you not to judge those inside? ( T ) 13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked person from among you.” [ d ] ( U )

  2. 1 Corinthians 5:5 Or of his body
  3. 1 Corinthians 5:11 The Greek word for brother or sister ( adelphos ) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God’s family; also in 8:11, 13.
