11 Copy my example, in the same way that I copy Christ's example.

Christian meetings

2 I praise you, because you remember me and everything that I taught you. You continue to obey the message that I gave to you. 3 This is something that I want you to know: Christ has authority over every man, as his head. Also, the head of a woman is her husband. And the head of Christ is God.

4 So, when you meet together to worship God, remember this. When a man prays to God, or he speaks a message from God, he should not cover his head. If he does that, he does not respect the one who is his head. 5 But when a woman prays or she speaks a message from God, she should cover her head. If she does not cover her head, she does not respect the one who is her head. It would be as bad as if she cut off all her hair. 6 If a woman refuses to cover her head, she should cut off her hair. But, if a woman has no hair, or she has very short hair, she becomes very ashamed. So it is better that she should cover her head in your meetings.

7 Men show what God is like and they show how great God is. So a man should not cover his head in your meetings. But a woman shows how great men are. 8 When God made people, he did not use part of the woman to make a man. God made the man first. Then he made the woman from part of the man. [ a ] 9 Neither did God make the man to help the woman. No, God made the woman to help the man. 10 That is why a woman should cover her head. It shows that she has authority on her head. That makes the angels happy.

11 But remember this: we all belong to the Lord. Men and women need to help one another. They can not remain separate. 12 It is true that God used part of the man to make the first woman. But it is also true that women give birth to men. Remember that all things come from God himself.

13 Think about this: If a woman prays to God but she has not covered her head, is that proper? 14 If a man has long hair, that should make him ashamed. That is clear. 15 But if a woman has long hair, she can be proud of it. God gave beautiful hair to women to cover their heads. 16 Some people may want to argue about this. But I have told you what we do. And all of God's people in the different churches do the same thing.

The Lord's Supper

17 Now I must teach you about something else about your meetings. I will not praise you, because more bad things than good things happen when you meet together. 18 First, I hear that there are separate groups when you meet together as God's people. [ b ] I believe that some of what I have heard about you is true. 19 Perhaps there must be separate groups among you. Then everyone can see clearly which group God accepts as right!

20 When you meet together, the meal that you eat is not really the Lord's Supper. 21 When you are ready to eat, each of you eats your own meal. You do not wait for anyone else. As a result, one of you may be hungry, while another person becomes drunk. 22 If you want to eat like that, you have your own homes where you can eat and drink! Instead, you insult the people of God's church. You make people who have nothing feel ashamed. I cannot praise you for what you do. Whatever I might say to you about this, I certainly cannot praise you.

23 This is the message that I received from the Lord. I then told it to you.

This is what happened on the night that Jesus' enemies took hold of him. The Lord Jesus picked up some bread to eat with his disciples. 24 He thanked God for the bread and then he broke it into pieces. He said: ‘This is my body that I give to save you. Eat this bread, so that you remember me.’

25 After they had eaten supper, Jesus took a cup of wine. He spoke to his disciples again. He said, ‘This cup shows my blood that will pour out when I die. God now makes a new agreement to save people because of my death. Whenever you drink from the cup in this way, do it to remember me.’

26 Every time that you eat bread and you drink from the cup like this, you are showing something. You are showing people what the Lord's death means. You should continue to do this until he returns.

27 Since that is true, you must be careful. Eat the bread and drink from the cup in a way that is right. Anyone who does not do that will be guilty. They are showing that they do not respect the Lord's body and his blood that he offered as a sacrifice. 28 So everyone must think carefully about how they eat the bread and they drink from the cup. 29 They must understand how important the Lord's body is. If anyone does not recognize this, God will punish them. 30 That is why many of you are weak and sick. Some of you have even died because of this. 31 But if we think carefully about ourselves, then God will not need to punish us.

32 But the Lord does need to punish us sometimes. When he does that, he is teaching us not to do wrong things. Then we will not be guilty, like other people who do not know God.

33 So, my Christian friends, be patient when you meet together to eat the Lord's Supper. Do not start to eat before everyone is ready. 34 If you are hungry, you should eat at home before you come. Then, when you meet together, God will not have any reason to punish you.

I will talk about the other things when I come to visit you.

Footnotes

  1. 11:8 See Genesis 2:21-23 .
  2. 11:18 They met in separate groups because they did not agree with one another. They argued and they quarrelled.

11 Follow my example, just as I follow the example of Christ.

Being Under Authority

2 I praise you because you remember me in all things. You follow closely the teachings I gave you. 3 But I want you to understand this: The head of every man is Christ. And the head of a woman is the man. [ a ] And the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man who prophesies or prays with his head covered brings shame to his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies should have her head covered. If her head is not covered, she brings shame to her head. Then she is the same as a woman who has her head shaved. 6 If a woman does not cover her head, it is the same as cutting off all her hair. But it is shameful for a woman to cut off her hair or to shave her head. So she should cover her head.

7 But a man should not cover his head, because he is made like God and is God’s glory. But woman is man’s glory. 8 Man did not come from woman. Woman came from man. 9 And man was not made for woman. Woman was made for man. 10 So that is why a woman should have her head covered with something that shows she is under authority. [ b ] Also, she should do this because of the angels.

11 But in the Lord the woman needs the man, and the man needs the woman. 12 This is true because woman came from man, but also man is born from woman. Really, everything comes from God.

13 Decide this for yourselves: Is it right for a woman to pray to God without something on her head? 14 Even nature itself teaches you that wearing long hair is shameful for a man. 15 But wearing long hair is a woman’s honor. Long hair is given to the woman to cover her head. 16 Some people may still want to argue about this. But we and the churches of God don’t accept what those people are doing.

The Lord’s Supper

17 In the things I tell you now I don’t praise you. Your meetings hurt you more than they help you. 18 First, I hear that when you meet together as a church you are divided. And this is not hard to believe 19 because of your idea that you must have separate groups to show who the real believers are!

20 When you all come together, it is not really the Lord’s Supper [ c ] you are eating. 21 I say this because when you eat, each one eats without waiting for the others. Some people don’t get enough to eat or drink, while others have too much. [ d ] 22 You can eat and drink in your own homes. It seems that you think God’s church is not important. You embarrass those who are poor. What can I say? Should I praise you? No, I cannot praise you for this.

23 The teaching I gave you is the same that I received from the Lord: On the night when the Lord Jesus was handed over to be killed, he took bread 24 and gave thanks for it. Then he divided the bread and said, “This is my body; it is for you. Eat this to remember me.” 25 In the same way, after they ate, Jesus took the cup of wine. He said, “This cup represents the new agreement from God, which begins with my blood sacrifice. When you drink this, do it to remember me.” 26 This means that every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are telling others about the Lord’s death until he comes again.

27 So if you eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in a way that does not fit its meaning, you are sinning against the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 Before you eat the bread and drink the cup, you should examine your own attitude. 29 If you eat and drink without paying attention to those who are the Lord’s body, your eating and drinking will cause you to be judged guilty. 30 That is why many in your group are sick and weak, and many have died. 31 But if we judged ourselves in the right way, then God would not judge us. 32 But when the Lord judges us, he punishes us to show us the right way. He does this so that we will not be condemned with the world.

33 So, my brothers and sisters, when you come together to eat, wait for each other. 34 If some are too hungry to wait, they should eat at home. Do this so that your meeting together will not bring God’s judgment on you. I will tell you what to do about the other things when I come.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Corinthians 11:3 the man This could also mean “her husband.”
  2. 1 Corinthians 11:10 have her head … authority Literally, “have authority on her head.” This could also be translated, “keep control of her head,” meaning “do what will keep people from misunderstanding her uncovered head.”
  3. 1 Corinthians 11:20 Lord’s Supper The special meal Jesus told his followers to eat to remember him. See Lk. 22:14-20.
  4. 1 Corinthians 11:21 have too much Literally, “get drunk.”

11 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

2 Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.

3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.

5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.

6 For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.

7 For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.

9 Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.

10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.

11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.

12 For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.

13 Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?

14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

17 Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.

18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.

19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.

20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.

21 For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

22 What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? what shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.

23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.

27 Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.

29 For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

30 For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

31 For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.

32 But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.

34 And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.

Christian Order

11 ( A ) Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.

2 Now ( B ) I praise you because you ( C ) remember me in everything and ( D ) hold firmly to the traditions, just as I handed them down to you. 3 But I want you to understand that Christ is the ( E ) head of every man, and [ a ] ( F ) the man is the head of a woman, and God is the ( G ) head of Christ. 4 Every man who has something on his head while praying or ( H ) prophesying disgraces his head. 5 But every ( I ) woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for it is one and the same as the woman [ b ] whose head is ( J ) shaved. 6 For if a woman does not cover [ c ] her head, have her also [ d ] cut her hair off; however, if it is disgraceful for a woman to [ e ] have her hair cut off or [ f ] her head shaved, have her cover [ g ] her head. 7 For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the ( K ) image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. 8 For ( L ) man [ h ] does not originate from woman, but woman from man; 9 for indeed man was not created for the woman’s sake, but ( M ) woman for the man’s sake. 10 Therefore the woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels. 11 However, in the Lord, neither is woman [ i ] independent of man, nor is man [ j ] independent of woman. 12 For as the woman originated from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and ( N ) all things originate ( O ) from God. 13 ( P ) Judge [ k ] for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does even nature itself not teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him, 15 but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her as a covering. 16 But if anyone is inclined to be contentious, ( Q ) we have no [ l ] such practice, nor have ( R ) the churches of God.

17 Now in giving this next instruction ( S ) I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better, but for the worse. 18 For, in the first place, when you come together [ m ] as a church, I hear that [ n ] ( T ) divisions exist among you; and in part I believe it. 19 For there also ( U ) have to be factions among you, ( V ) so that those who are approved may become [ o ] evident among you. 20 Therefore when you come together it is not to eat the Lord’s Supper, 21 for when you eat, each one takes his own supper first; and one goes hungry while ( W ) another gets drunk. 22 What! Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the ( X ) church of God and ( Y ) shame those who have nothing? What am I to say to you? Shall ( Z ) I praise you? In this I do not praise you.

The Lord’s Supper

23 For ( AA ) I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you, that ( AB ) the Lord Jesus, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread; 24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 25 In the same way He also took ( AC ) the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the ( AD ) new covenant in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it , in remembrance of Me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death ( AE ) until He comes.

27 Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy way, shall be ( AF ) guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But a person must ( AG ) examine himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not properly recognize the [ p ] body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number [ q ] ( AH ) are asleep. 31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are ( AI ) disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with ( AJ ) the world.

33 So then, my brothers and sisters , when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is ( AK ) hungry, have him eat ( AL ) at home, so that you do not come together for judgment. As to the remaining matters, I will ( AM ) give instructions ( AN ) when I come.

On Covering the Head in Worship

2 I praise you ( C ) for remembering me in everything ( D ) and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you. ( E ) 3 But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, ( F ) and the head of the woman is man, [ a ] ( G ) and the head of Christ is God. ( H ) 4 Every man who prays or prophesies ( I ) with his head covered dishonors his head. 5 But every woman who prays or prophesies ( J ) with her head uncovered dishonors her head—it is the same as having her head shaved. ( K ) 6 For if a woman does not cover her head, she might as well have her hair cut off; but if it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, then she should cover her head.

7 A man ought not to cover his head, [ b ] since he is the image ( L ) and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; ( M ) 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. ( N ) 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own [ c ] head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God. ( O )

13 Judge for yourselves: Is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered? 14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a disgrace to him, 15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering. 16 If anyone wants to be contentious about this, we have no other practice—nor do the churches of God. ( P )

Correcting an Abuse of the Lord’s Supper ( Q )

17 In the following directives I have no praise for you, ( R ) for your meetings do more harm than good. 18 In the first place, I hear that when you come together as a church, there are divisions ( S ) among you, and to some extent I believe it. 19 No doubt there have to be differences among you to show which of you have God’s approval. ( T ) 20 So then, when you come together, it is not the Lord’s Supper you eat, 21 for when you are eating, some of you go ahead with your own private suppers. ( U ) As a result, one person remains hungry and another gets drunk. 22 Don’t you have homes to eat and drink in? Or do you despise the church of God ( V ) by humiliating those who have nothing? ( W ) What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? ( X ) Certainly not in this matter!

23 For I received from the Lord ( Y ) what I also passed on to you: ( Z ) The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, ( AA ) which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant ( AB ) in my blood; ( AC ) do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes. ( AD )

27 So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. ( AE ) 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves ( AF ) before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves. 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. ( AG ) 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. ( AH ) 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined ( AI ) so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. ( AJ )

33 So then, my brothers and sisters, when you gather to eat, you should all eat together. 34 Anyone who is hungry ( AK ) should eat something at home, ( AL ) so that when you meet together it may not result in judgment.

And when I come ( AM ) I will give further directions.
